The file extension WPD
represents document file
created by either Word
Perfect or the built-in
word processor found in
various versions of Act!
by Sage Software.
Act! is a contact
management system that
allows users to create a
database containing all
kinds of information
about their contacts
including their name,
address, company
information, title,
notes, sales histories,
and much more. Part of
the appeal of this
system is that it allows
you to attach all kinds
of information to
contacts, view reports,
and better manage your
contacts. A built-in
word processor makes it
easy to open up a
contact and send them a
letter, create a
proposal, send an
invoice, or even create
mail merge documents and
mass mailings for
multiple contacts.
When you use the Act!
word processor to create
a document, the document
uses the default .wpd
file extension. While
this is fine if you are
planning to simply print
the document at your
office and then fax or
mail it, it may not be
fine for other purposes.
For example, if you want
to send an email
containing the .wpd
file, your recipient
must have Act! or a
compatible application
in order to open it.
Likewise, you might be
on the receiving end
some day and receive an
email containing a WPD
file. Unless you have
Act! or Word Perfect,
you won’t be able to
open the file. You can
always ask the sender to
re-send the document in
a more common format
such as .doc, .rtf, or
.txt but what if the
sender forgets or is too
busy to respond in a
timely manner?
Fortunately, programs
such as Microsoft Word
can deal with .wpd files
if they have the
appropriate viewers
installed. Many versions
of Word have built-in
capabilities for
handling various
document types. For
example, Word 2007 can
open WordPerfect 5x and
above files.
Even if you have the
appropriate word
processing software on
your computer for
opening documents with
the file extension WPD,
sometimes your
computer's operating
system doesn't know
which one to use to open
.WPD files. For example,
if you have both Word
Perfect and Microsoft
Word installed on your
computer, your computer
may launch Word Perfect
when you click WPD files
and Word with you click
on DOC files. But what
if you want to use Word
for opening WPD files?
You can do this by
setting the file
association for .WPD
files to launch Word
rather than Word
Perfect.
To do this, open up
Windows Explorer by
right-clicking the
Windows Start Button and
choosing Explore. Next,
find a WPD file and
right-click it. A small
menu will appear with
several choices. Choose
"Open with" from this
menu. Now, scroll
through the list of
programs until you find
Microsoft Word and
highlight it. Do you see
a tiny little box near
the bottom of the dialog
box that says, "Always
use the selected program
to open this type of
file"? If you want Word,
not Word Perfect, to be
the default program for
opening WPD files, place
a check mark in the box.
