The file extension DMG,
or Macintosh OS X Disk
Copy Disk Image File, is
a system file that was
dreamed up by Apple
Computer, Inc. The file
extension DMG is used
mainly on Macintosh
computers. They are
basically image files
that are treated by the
Macintosh as if they are
real disks. When you
have this type of DMG
file, you can burn it to
CD and mount it as if it
were a normal volume.
These files are usually
created with Disk Copy.
Sometimes, Windows users
receive DMG files and
Windows simply doesn't
know how to deal with
them. When this occurs,
clicking on the file
extension DMG file in
Windows Explorer doesn't
work. Since these are
Macintosh files, Windows
isn’t equipped to handle
them.
If you have a Windows PC
and receive a .DMG file,
it is most likely a
Macintosh file that you
won’t be able to use.
Did you know that when
downloading files from
the Internet, you will
often have a choice for
PC or Mac files? Some
websites issue EXE files
for Windows computers
and DMG files for Mac
computers. Make sure you
pick the appropriate
file type for your
system.
If you want to convert a
.DMG file to an ISO
file, you’re in luck.
You can convert file
extension DMG to ISO
with the dmg2iso
program. This utility
converts the DMG file to
an .ISO file which can
then be read with a ISO
file reader. In
addition, the file can
be burned to a CD. To do
this, you will need to
run dmg2iso at a command
prompt. You will also
need to follow the
commands listed that are
listed on the DMG2ISO
website for the Perl
version (except you will
need to substitute .EXE
for .PL in the command).
Password-protected DMG
may not be mountable by
some software. Also, DMG
files have numerous
formats including:
Fat32, HFS, HFS+, UFS,
ProDOS, and Linux. In
many cases, you will
need special mounting
software or specialized
programs such as
IsoBuster and UltraISO
that are able to
interpret these files
directly.
If you DMG files and the
related conversion
utilities are giving you
trouble, make sure that
you have the latest
version of the software.
Updates, hotfixes, and
patches may have been
released that address
known issues with the
application.
Remember that if you
have a Windows-based PC,
you will not be able to
open DMG files directly
because DMG files are
Macintosh files. You can
use a converter to
convert them into ISO
files.
Finally, file corruption
can happen to a variety
of files including file
extension DMG. When .DMG
files become damaged,
they generally can't be
used. A problem with
file extension DMG can
also cause the
application used to open
the file to crash too.
Further breakdowns can
cause even more file
corruption within the
computer. Damaged files
create an endless cycle
of damage - with each
new crash, further
damage to the computer
occurs. If files are
getting corrupt, it’s a
smart idea to do some
general maintenance to
your computer to clean
it up and prevent
further damage.
